Robertson’s Road Tip: Maximizing Your EV Range in Winter

Don’t let the New England cold put a chill on your electric vehicle’s performance. While lower temperatures can temporarily impact your EV’s range, a few smart practices can ensure you get the most out of your GMC Sierra EV or Hummer EV, even in the deepest winter.

Here are a few tips for optimal EV battery performance in low temperatures:

• Precondition While Plugged In: This is your #1 defense. Always precondition your GMC’s cabin and battery while it is still plugged into the charger. This uses grid power to bring the battery to an optimal operating temperature and heat the interior, saving your battery’s stored energy for driving range.
• Use Seat and Steering Wheel Warmers: Heating the cabin is the biggest power draw in an EV during winter. Instead of blasting the main HVAC system, use the heated seats and heated steering wheel (available in many GMC models) as they use significantly less power.
• Charge Before You Drive: Batteries perform best when they’re warm. Charging naturally warms the battery, so starting your trip immediately after a charging session (especially fast charging) helps maintain better range and performance.
• Drive Smoothly: Icy roads and reduced traction already call for cautious driving, but smooth acceleration and gentle braking also help conserve energy. Maximizing regenerative braking is key, as it feeds energy back into the battery.
