Black Pioneers in the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry has been a major driver of economic growth and innovation for over a century. However, it is often overlooked that many Black pioneers have made significant contributions to this industry.

One such pioneer was Garrett Morgan, who invented the traffic signal in 1922. His invention has saved countless lives and made driving safer for everyone. Another important figure was Richard B. Spikes, who founded the first Black-owned car dealership in the United States in 1934. Spikes’ dealership helped to break down racial barriers in the automotive industry and provided opportunities for Black people to purchase and service their own cars.

Witnessing a collision between a car and a horse-drawn carriage in 1922 inspired Garrett Morgan to invent a three-position traffic signal. He recognized the need for drivers to have more warning before stopping and improved upon the existing two-position signal by adding a third, cautionary light. After securing patents in the United States, Britain, and Canada, Morgan sold his invention to General Electric for $40,000, which is equivalent to approximately $609,000 today.

Beyond his inventive pursuits, Garrett Morgan was also a dedicated social activist. He co-founded the Cleveland Association of Colored Men (which later became part of the NAACP), established the first Black-owned country club, and launched Cleveland’s first African-American newspaper, “The Cleveland Call.”

Homer B. Roberts was another pioneer who made a significant impact on the automotive industry. He founded the Roberts Motor Company in 1946, which became the first Black-owned dealership to sell trucks. Roberts’ dealership helped to expand the reach of trucks and made them more accessible to Black customers.

Roberts’ success wasn’t just about selling vehicles; it represented a crucial step towards greater economic opportunity and inclusion within the automotive sector. His business provided jobs, fostered community connections, and demonstrated the viability of Black entrepreneurship in a field where access had historically been limited. By breaking down these barriers, Roberts paved the way for future generations of Black business owners and professionals in the automotive industry.

Charlie Wiggins was a talented race car driver who competed in NASCAR for over 30 years. He was the first Black driver to win a NASCAR race and the first Black driver to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Wiggins’ success helped to pave the way for other Black drivers in NASCAR and helped to make the sport more inclusive.

Wiggins’ journey, however, was not without its challenges. He faced significant racial prejudice and discrimination throughout his career, often being denied opportunities afforded to white drivers. Despite these obstacles, his talent and determination shone through, earning him victories and ultimately a place in NASCAR history. His legacy extends beyond his racing achievements, serving as an inspiration to aspiring drivers and a symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity.

McKinley Thompson Jr., a trailblazing engineer at General Motors for over 40 years, played a key role in developing the Cadillac Eldorado and other luxury vehicles, contributing to GM’s success in the high-end car market. His innovative designs and engineering expertise helped shape the look and feel of these iconic cars. Thompson’s contributions cemented his legacy as a pioneer in the automotive industry.

Thompson’s work extended beyond just aesthetics; he was deeply involved in the engineering that made these luxury vehicles perform as well as they looked. He tackled complex challenges related to vehicle dynamics, ride quality, and structural integrity, ensuring that the driving experience matched the prestige of the Cadillac brand. His commitment to precision and performance was instrumental in maintaining GM’s reputation for excellence in the luxury car segment.

Furthermore, Thompson’s career at GM served as an inspiration to aspiring engineers, particularly within the African-American community. His success demonstrated that talent and hard work could overcome barriers, opening doors for future generations of Black engineers in the automotive industry. While his specific contributions may not always be widely known, his impact on the design and engineering of iconic American vehicles, and his role as a role model, solidify his place as a significant figure in automotive history.
